AUSTIN, Texas, February 2004-In the last few years, there has been an ever-increasing interest in the development of fuel cell technology. According to a new report, "Fuel Cells: A Technology Forecast," Texas could easily become a leader in the fuel cell field, if the state government, industry, and academic institutions are willing to make the necessary commitments. The resulting opportunities could be very significant in terms of capital infusion and job creation.
Fuel Cells: A Technology Forecast, an 80-page report written by John H. Vanston, Ph.D. (Chairman, Technology Futures, Inc. [TFI]) and Henry Elliott (Consultant, TFI), and sponsored by the Texas State Technical College (TSTC), discusses the fuel cell industry in relation to Texas industry and educational institutions. It also covers the different types of fuel cell markets and the use of fuel cells in electric power production and motor vehicles. In discussing the report, lead author John Vanston states, "The fuel cell industry is only now beginning to achieve its promise. Given its strong long-term position in the energy sector, it is possible for Texas to establish itself as an 'early adopter' state. Such a position will make the state attractive to manufacturing and service companies as commercialization accelerates."
Michael Bettersworth, Associate Vice Chancellor for Technology Advancement with TSTC and Program Director for the forecast, adds, "This report supports the development of fuel cell programs at community and technical colleges by providing instructional officers and curriculum developers with applicable strategies, explanations, and projections of the emerging and increasingly mature fuel cell market."

Co-author, Mr. Elliott, works in the areas of nanotechnology, materials science, and technology forecasting. Prior to joining TFI, he co-founded Nanotechnologies Inc., an Austin based nanomaterials company.
This project was conducted under TSTC's Programs for Emerging Technologies (PET), which identifies, evaluates, and forecasts potential emerging technology programs.
